Many parents are juggling, professional expectations, and childcare responsibilities. It is a constant exhausting struggle, but childcare is not optional. It is a pressing need. Many parents are skeptical about schools reopening and the safety concerns of daycares; many parents are turning to in-home childcare. In a recent national survey of parents by the world’s largest matching service for families and caregivers, Care.com, 63% of those who use daycare are uncomfortable returning to daycare as an option.

According to CNBC, Black families generally spend more than half of their income on childcare costs. The following is a list of do’s and don’t for Black families, particularly in obtaining childcare.
Understand the difference between a nanny and a sitter.

Many prefer weekly payments and expect bonuses for exceptional work.

In Texas, a little over $29K is normal and North Carolina is about $27K. NEVER EVER PAY BELOW MINIMUM WAGE. Childcare providers are an essential part of the economy. If they do not show up to work, you cannot show up to work. They should be compensated for the work they do, mainly because they help your family in such an intimate way.
Have an open conversation about COVID 19 Status. It is only fair that both family and caregiver discuss how they are taking precautions against Covid 19. Families want to limit their children’s exposure as much as possible, which is why they turn to in-home care. Ensure that your caregiver practices routine good hygiene and practices social distancing outside of the home.
Do check all references, background checks and certifications the caregiver providers. You want to ensure that the person you hire is safe and able to perform the tasks you require.
Do not ignore your gut instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it is not correct. It can be terrifying to hire
